| THE CONCERT GARDEN |
The Concert Garden, at 2056-58 Ellsworth Street was first formed in 1989 by the Point Breeze Federation Inc. with support from neighboring organizations and individuals including Mamie Nichols. Dozens of community green spaces were created in Point Breeze, in the 1980s as one of PHS Philadelphia Green's earliest Greene Countrie Townes. The Concert Garden is one of the original sites, and has historically hosted high profile events such as the beginnings of the Mellon Jazz festival.
PBPioneers helped restore the space with dedicated neighbors and the support of NGA in March of 2009. It's now a vibrant space where community members can participate in the ongoing restoration. In the late summer of 2009, the Concert Garden was awarded Third Place in the City's Garden Contest for "Best Community Flower Garden". Come out to the "Summer Jazz Series", the "Pay What You Can Yoga" and all of the fine events happening in the Concert Garden this Spring and Summer. If you're interested in holding an event, or just getting access to the garden for any occassion, please email info@pbpioneers.com

| THE SHADE GARDEN |
The Shade Garden, located at 1214 S. 19th Street, is a newly restored community sitting garden. The site was originally started in conjunction with PHS's Philly Green program during the "Greene Countrie Towne" initiative in Point Breeze.
With help from NGA and The Philadelphia Committee of the Garden Club of America, PBPioneers secured a grant to help restore the Shade Garden back to it's loving condition. This grant will help PBPioneers and dedicated neighbors in our efforts to beautify this community space for all to enjoy. The plans include native shade plants, a vertical garden, use of recycled materials and more. To see the plans for the Shade Garden click here.

| THE HARING GARDEN |
The Haring Garden, with the world famous Keith Haring Mural, was founded in 1980 as an urban youth garden. The Haring Garden is currently one of the most famous green spaces in Point Breeze, mostly because of the mural's significance in art history. A stop on the Philadelphia Mural Arts tour, the Haring Garden continues to remain an exciting, vibrant place for all to enjoy.
PBPioneers, neighbors and a local Landscape Architect work closely with NGA to continue loving care in this space. We're working with nearby residents to ensure that children continue to learn and grow inside the Haring Garden, to honor the mural that shines so brightly in our community.

| CLEAN UPS |
The Point Breeze Pioneer group is dedicated to minimizing trash, liter and dumping in abandoned spaces by working with our Block Captains, Parks, neighbors and Point Breeze organizations to Clean our neighborhood. Education about the negative effects of liter and illegal dumping is the major component for engaging residents in the restoration of our urban environment. Although we're moving along with the Cleaning mission, we need more help then ever before to continue advocating for better trash removal resources, dumping and liter fines, and so much more. Please show your support by coming to one of the events, volunteering to assist in the organization of an educational program, or any other way you think your knowledge can help.
If your block is in need of our help, please join our cleaning efforts and we'll organize on behalf of your block to continue improving Point Breeze. Cleaner streets are safer streets, and we all need to work together to attain these goals!

| ANTI-LITTER CAMPAIGN |
The Point Breeze Anti-Litter Campaign is organized by The Point Breeze Avenue Business Association, Newbold Neighbors Association and The Point Breeze Pioneers as an effort to help educate residents about minimizing litter in our neighborhood. On June 5th, 2010 these three groups and our volunteers will visit various Point Breeze blocks to hand out Anti-Circulatory stickers and post Water Stickers for Storm Drain Marking to help educate residents about how litter affects our drains, drinking water and soil. The Partnership for the Delaware Estuary and the Philadelphia Water Department has provided us with kits to mark storm water drains with anti-litter stickers that explain why litter is bad for our streams, rivers and City water.
Please sign up today to volunteer with our group and help in our continued efforts to stop litter in our neighborhood.

| TREE VITALIZE |
PBPioneers is always applying for trees through the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's TreeVitalize Program. If you're interested in getting a free tree for the front of your home, please download the application, print and fill out, and send back to info@pbpioneers.com or call the phone # listed on the applications, to drop it off in person. The applications can only be turned in to PHS twice a year (spring & fall), but we can accept them from you all year round. If you work at a school, church or business in Point Breeze, and would like to see trees on the property, please also print out this application and give to the owner of the property.
DOWNLOAD THE APPLICATION HERE
We hope to increase tree coverage in Point Breeze by 30% in the next 3 years, to help decrease individual property owner's utility bills, increase greening initiatives and the overall understanding of how trees benefit our daily lives. |
| CONTAINERS |
During PHS's Philadelphia Green initiative in the 1980's, Point Breeze received an abundance of these large, white concrete containers you see on many blocks. Currently the state of these containers are in disarray, and it's a goal of PBPioneers to re-paint and plant new perennials in these containers as a we continue our greening efforts throughout the neighborhood. The first step in this process is to identify all neglected containers to properly budget the steps towards restoring them to their original condition, then planting easy to maintain perennial plants for the pleasure of nearby residents. If you know of containers that are in need of our help, please add them to our map!
If you're having trouble adding a Container location to our map, please email the information including the address of the Container to info@pbpioneers.com |
