SUMMER JAZZ SERIES A HUGE SUCCESS! |
| |

The Summer Jazz Series held on Saturday, August 20th, at the Concert
Garden in Point Breeze, was a success with 220 attendees, raising $500
for Pbpioneers and the NGA from food and drink sales donated by our
gracious sponsors South Philly Taproom, At Media, Ben & Jerry's, Penn
Distributors, Pub Webb and Honest Tea.
The crowd enjoyed beautiful weather, and performances by the
talented Opus Soul, Big Unkle and Mojoceratops. Guests of the Concert Garden included a diverse mix of neighbors and locals who heard
of the event through At Media's promotions on Philly Fun Guide, NBC
10, Uwishunu, South Philly Review and more. Others strolled in from
the street to listen to the great tunes and join the fun!
Highlights of the evening included a visit from special guest State
Representative Kenyatta Johnson who sat and chatted with South
Philly Taproom owner John Longacre. The event was well attended by
the elderly and children who both enjoyed Ben & Jerry's ice cream as
they danced to the soulful sounds of funk and jazz. One longtime
resident said "I've lived here for 25 years and have never seen
anything like this going on in our community. I am so happy to sit and
enjoy live music, good people, and this beautiful weather!"

SUMMER JAZZ SERIES WRAP-UP + PHOTOS |
| |

The Summer Jazz Series on June 20th, 2010 provided the chance for Philadelphia residents and friends to enjoy an outdoor concert celebrating Father's Day at the Concert Garden in Point Breeze, South Philadelphia. The natural shade provided by canopies of trees was the perfect setting to enjoy our Sunday afternoon jazz concert with The Dirt Party, Stephanie Klein and Friends, and Jersey Fresh performing modern jazz with the City skyline as a backdrop.
Our gracious sponsors provided cold beer and good food for the attendees; Pita Pit provided mixed wraps, Dapper Dog was grilling up gourmet hot dogs on the spot, Great Lakes Brewery gave cases of delicious local beer, and Pub Webb donated cases of Bud Light for everyone to enjoy. We gave away raffled items such as 4 tickets to Jack Johnson's upcoming concert, $25 gift certificates to McFaddens at Citizen Bank Park and $50 Zipcar certificates. Zipcar was there to introduce their new Mifflin St & Point Breeze Avenue location, while enjoying the free jazz on the summer's hot day!
PBPioneers wants to thank all of the attendees and volunteers, and especially the local businesses who graciously sponsored the event for the great cause of raising money for the Neighborhood Gardens Association's continued care for their 30 land trust community gardens. A special thanks to At Media for producing and advertising the event, Alexandra Calukovic's marketing services and event planning, and Media Copy for the printed promotions. Without the help of all of these spectacular people, and the skilled bands, PBPioneers would not have been able to pull off this 2nd successful Summer Jazz Series!

Saturday June 5th at 9:30am sharp
Neighbors In Action at 1634 Wharton St.
We'll be participating in The Point Breeze Anti-Litter Campaign. On June 5th, 2010 these three groups and our volunteers will visit various Point Breeze blocks to hand out Anti-Circulatory stickers and post Water Stickers for Storm Drain Marking to help educate residents about how litter affects our drains, drinking water and soil. The Partnership for the Delaware Estuary and the Philadelphia Water Department has provided us with kits to mark storm water drains with anti-litter stickers that explain why liter is bad for our streams, rivers and City water. We're planning to visit over 1000 households, 14 blocks and post stickers on over 40 drains, to help increase awareness about how litter effects our community, and educate community members to help maintain our clean up efforts.
Please sign up today to volunteer with our group and help in our continued efforts to stop litter in our neighborhood. |

TREE VITALIZE 2010 - Get a Tree in Front of your home! |
| |

PBPioneers is applying for Spring Trees through the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's TreeVitalize Program. Last fall we successfully planted 12 new trees in Point Breeze, and this Spring we're looking to apply for more than 50 trees! If you're interested in getting a free tree for the front of your home, please download the application, print and fill out, and send back to info@pbpioneers.com or call the phone # listed on the applications, to drop it off in person. If you work at a school, church or business in Point Breeze, and would like to see trees on the property, please also print out this application and give to the owner of the property.
DOWNLOAD THE APPLICATION HERE
We hope to increase tree coverage in Point Breeze by 30% in the next 3 years, to help decrease individual property owner's utility bills, increase greening initiatives and the overall understanding of how trees benefit our daily lives.
Note that a signed Property Owner Request form does not guarantee that you will receive a tree. First, your site will have to be inspected and approved for a tree. In addition, while we always do our best to fulfill as many approved tree requests as possible in the upcoming season, some sites will likely need to be carried over to the following planting season, due to capacity constraints.
If you have questions or would like to volunteer to help pick up and plant the new trees, please email us at info@pbpioneers.com |
